Mindaugas Kavaliauskas was born in 1974 in Kaunas, where he lives and works until now. He is photographer, historian, critic, publicist, curator, lecturer, publisher of photography, director of only annual and the longest – running art photography festival in the Baltic states – KAUNAS PHOTO.
In 2004 he founded “Kaunas Photo Days”, the first festival of photography in Lithuania and the Baltic States, now known as “Kaunas Photo” festival, which he is directing until now. In the same year 2004, he founded a new gallery of photography “F Galerija”, located on the upper station of Kaunas Žaliakalnis funicular. The gallery focuses on showing works of emerging photographers from all over the world. Both Kaunas Photo festival and the F Galerija are now in the seventh year of activity.
Being an active member of the international photographic community, Mindaugas Kavaliauskas has held a number of exhibitions of Lithuanian photography in photographic festivals, galleries, museums in France, Italy, Poland, Finland, China. He is a frequent invited conference speaker, portfolio reviewer, member of jury panels, in competitions, festivals of photography in Europe, USA, China, Australia. He is author of over thirty articles about photographers, photographic festivals, history of photography, published in books, catalogs, scientific publications and art magazines in Lithuania and abroad.
He is increasingly interested in producing books on contemporatry photography, focusing on photography of the 21str century such as „Customs Ignored: Lithuanian and Australian Photography.“ (2008)
He studied photography in Kaunas Photo Art School (1989-92), than obtained Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Art History at Vytautas Magnus University (Kaunas, 1996 and 2000). He further studied photography at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie, (Arles, France, 1997-8), Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (Paris, 1998-9), University of Lausanne (Switzerland, 2000-1). He participated in a number of internships, residences at European photographic institutions, such as Musée de l'Elysée (Lausanne), Bildens Hus (Sundsvall, Sweden), Hippolyte gallery (Helsinki, Finland), and also at creative workshops in Burghausen (Germany, 1995), Arles (France, 1995), Kosice (Slovakia, 2008).
He has been teaching photography at Kaunas University of Technology (2001-6), Vytautas Magnus University (2001, 2008, 2010), different workshops.
Mindaugas Kavaliauskas is interested in all types of photography except of glamour, artistic nudes and wildlife.
