Gerald Matt studierte Rechtswissenschaften, Betriebswirtschaft und Kunstgeschichten in Innsbruck. In den Jahren 1991 und 1992 war er im österreichischen Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Kultur in der Abteilung Internationale Biennalen, Auslandsausstellungen und kulturpolitische Grundsatzfragen tätig.
1992 gründete er, gemeinsam mit Dr. Wolfgang Fetz den Vorarlberger Kunstverein Magazin 4 und ist mit ihm bis heute für das Programm verantwortlich.
Im gleichen Jahr wechselte er als persönlicher Berater zur Wiener Kulturstadträtin Dr. Ursula Pasterk.
Seit 1996 ist Gerald Matt Direktor der Kunsthalle Wien und hat in dieser Funktion den Umzug der Institution ins Museumsquartier sowie die Neugründung des Kunsthalle „Project Space“ am Karlsplatz organisiert. Darüber hinaus ist Gerald Matt international als Autor und Kurator tätig und lehrt u.a. als Gastprofessor an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien sowie am Institut für Kulturmanagement an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien.

Gerald Matt studied law, business studies, and art history in Innsbruck. In 1991 and 1992 was engaged in the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture in the department responsible for international biennales, exhibitions abroad and cultural policy issues. In 1992, together with Dr. Wolfgang Fetz, he founded the Vorarlberger Kunstverein Magazin 4 and is still responsible for the programme there. In the same year he became the personal advisor to the Vienna city councillor responsible for culture, Dr. Ursula Pasterk.
Since 1996 Gerald Matt has been the director of the Kunsthalle Wien and in this function was responsible for the move into the Museum Quarter and founding the new the Kunsthalle “Project Space am Karlsplatz”. In addition Gerald Matt is internationally active as an author and curator and teaches, inter alia, as visiting professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna as well as the Institute for Culture Management of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
